Iron deficiency

One of the most common iron deficiency anemia symptoms is fatigue.  It’s a general loss of energy that can’t be explained and that persists no matter how much sleep you get.  It’s not even that you will want to sleep, it’s that you will feel zoned, drained, spacey and weak but won’t necessarily be able to go to sleep.

What’s happening with these iron deficiency anemia symptoms is that your body doesn’t have enough oxygen.  You don’t have enough red blood cells to carry the oxygen to your organs so it’s like they are starving and can’t function properly.

So the most easily identifiable of the iron deficiency anemia symptoms is extreme fatigue.  If you think you may have iron deficiency anemia then see a doctor and don’t self-diagnose.  Taking iron pills when you don’t need them can lead to liver problems.

The classic signs of iron deficiency are weakness, pale skin, cold hands & feet, and feeling very tired.  There are a few more lesser known symptoms that may point to an iron deficiency:

  • brittle nails
  • headache
  • crave non-food things like dirt and ice
  • restless legs
  • sore tongue
